Strong House Foundations: Materials, Weight, and Process

foundation house

A concrete slab foundation is a thick flat slab that is reinforced with steel bars and wire mesh, and the slab is poured on crushed gravel which levels the site. Pier foundations use small square or circular pads of concrete located at strategic points around the outer perimeter of the building. These pads are placed into the ground with vertical posts of treated wood or steel connecting to the underside of the structure via horizontal beams.

Caissons and Grade Beams

Your home’s design and soil composition also contribute to the decision-making process, making every home’s best foundation type unique. Ultimately, the right foundation type for you is the one that complements your lifestyle, home design, and local environment. Insulated concrete foundations (ICFs) are durable and good for areas prone to serious weather events, including earthquakes and hurricanes. Slab-on-grade foundations offer up-front savings but can have hidden costs. With a clearer picture of your needs, consider the following foundation types to find your best match.

B. Types of Home Foundation Materials and Methods

Again, a post and pier option may work better than a full basement or slab. Then again, in more moderate climates, a monolith slab is often sufficient and a budget-friendly choice. With 70 years of supporting our clients, we know that building a home is the decision of a lifetime. Our expert team will work with you, give you the knowledge and support that you need, and empower you to build your new home perfect down to the last detail. Any residential foundation type you choose, as long as it is properly installed, will serve your home well.

Most Common House Foundation Types To Consider

Most people choose store-bought filler material such as limestone or aggregate to backfill the foundation. For example, installing radiant heating in the floor, which can save on heating and burst pipe costs, adds a significant bump to the bottom line. If you need additional waterproofing or sealant due to climate or site drainage issues, those can also add up. Pricing also depends on materials costs, extra features, and transportation costs. The deeper your contractor must dig, the more expensive the foundation project will be.

How much does it cost to fill in a crawl space?

The base can be steel, but you can also opt for concrete or ABS plastic pads underneath. Installation can be quicker with this foundation, but it’s only applicable to manufactured or mobile homes. Concrete panels are best for multifamily units and are cost-effective for residential homes with repetitive designs. However, if budget is a concern, we would not recommend concrete panels for custom homes. Contractors design and manufacture concrete panels off-site, offering faster installation than traditional concrete blocks or poured-in-place concrete. Pier and beam foundations have specific construction and maintenance requirements but offer several advantages.

I was reaping all of the benefits of the program and realizing all that it offered me, as long as I put in real effort. The program is definitely a two-way street, where you get out what you put in. Smaller hairline cracks won’t cause structural issues, but they can be a source of leaks. Since bamboo is fast-growing and invasive, it poses a bigger threat to house foundations than tree roots. A beam foundation is usually much deeper and more reliable but it can absorb water over time. You can choose the depth and the height of the beam foundation but you can’t play around with a slab foundation that much. If you’re building a passive or energy-efficient house then it’s essential to start with the foundation. The foundation should contribute to keeping the house air-tight, thus natural materials such as rammed earth, recycled steel, and straw bales are the preferred options.

Raised Foundation With Crawl Space

And if you want to remodel the main level of the house, a basement offers easy access to plumbing, wiring, and ductwork for remodeling-related alterations. Slab-on-grade foundations are heavy-duty concrete slabs with footings dug into the ground under the slab. They’re typically reinforced with rebar, and their wide footings disperse the weight of the building above. Concrete block walls can be built on top of the slab to create a basement or crawl space, or the builder can frame the main floor right on top of the slab.

Concrete Slab Leak Repair

Instead, they have deeply-dug footings at load-bearing points under the house. There are generally heavy-duty timbers that extend from the footings to the home, and this design helps keep the home dry and safe in coastal areas where flooding is common. A slab foundation is a type of foundation that is poured directly on the construction site.

All the residents looked so engaged and like they were actually enjoying getting well. Our supportive staff and peer culture allows natural consequences of behavior to work themselves out within the group. We have created a non-punitive environment based on trust, and allow our residents to navigate real life - by living it. “You can back a truck up to one corner and pour the whole foundation,” says Ed Sauter, executive director of the Concrete Foundations Association. “It just spreads everywhere.” That beats having to pump or shovel the concrete where it’s needed.

You can include windows, stylish doors, and even a patio on your walkout basement. This way, you can enjoy entertaining in your backyard—or even rent out your basement as an apartment unit. Keep in mind that foundation projects also require permits, which your builder may or may not handle for you. The cost of your foundation depends on many factors, including the average cost of labor in your area.

Slab foundations can be found just about everywhere, and are the predominant foundation in some markets. These foundations are most appropriate for level ground, or ground with a minimal slope. The primary advantage of concrete slab foundations is that they are usually the least expensive to build. Disadvantages include difficult access to plumbing and electrical components that are installed in or under the concrete. Another disadvantage is the lack of additional storage space that a basement foundation affords. Consider the average temperature, humidity, and climate when choosing a foundation type.

This building houses all of our staff and serves as a main hub for many activities and groups. This space also hosts our yoga classes, meditation sessions and acupuncture. The doors to this building and all groups that meet here are open to all of our alumni at any time. ICF foundations are quickly becoming a popular option due to the high energy-efficiency ratings this type of material offers.

How Much Does A Foundation Cost In 2024?

foundation house

And while these foundations do require more excavation than poured slabs, they’re still relatively affordable. Overall it is an easier system to build and less expensive than the more common perimeter concrete foundation. It is appropriate only for houses in areas with a low likelihood of seismic activity or very strong winds since the posts sit closer to the surface of the ground. Of course, the type of foundation you ultimately choose will influence the price more than any other feature. The most expensive foundations are basement builds — especially if you want a finished basement — while the least costly is a concrete slab.

Exceptional Experiences

Installing a new foundation costs $10,000 on average, but prices can range from $5,000 to $40,000 depending on the size of your home. You’ll pay only around half the price of a new installation or less by repairing your existing foundation. Slab jacking costs between $3 and $20 per square foot or $7,100 to $48,000 for the average home size of 2,400 square feet, as per data from the U.S. You can break down the cost of your foundation repair project, in part, by breaking down the cost of labor and the price of your materials. There's a lot to enjoy about living in Los Angeles, but the city is not without some drawbacks.

Stone

A cracked foundation is a problem because, well, your foundation anchors your whole house. And the reason I wouldn't buy a home with foundation damage is that the cost to address it could be exorbitant. When you buy a home, needing to make repairs at some point is pretty much inevitable. That's why in the course of buying, it's pretty important to have your home undergo a thorough inspection.

It must be tailored to its site like a custom suit, taking into account soil conditions, water tables, even the quality of the backfill. When and why is it better to use professional foundation repair companies? Below, we outline common foundation problems that are difficult to fix yourself.

However, the installers need to excavate and install foundation footings to anchor it to the ground and provide protection against frost heave or soil movement. Since the concrete pour is complete in one nonstop step, the finished result is a seamless wall or base of solid concrete that acts as a support and protective barrier for the home. Poured concrete is the most common material used to make residential foundations. It's seen in full basement, daylight basement, crawl space, and slab-on-grade foundations. This is due to the high versatility, durability, and resistances of concrete as a construction material. A crawl space may have a concrete floor or be left with a bare earth floor.

Humidity is always present in basements and can be minimized by dehumidifiers and waterproofing. However, it is necessary to continually keep an eye out for mold or mildew so as to not compromise the air quality of your home. Since stairs access most basements, utilizing the basement as living space is not always a viable option for those with additional mobility needs. Full basement foundations are at least 7 feet high, on average, though newly constructed homes tend to have taller basements for future conversion potential. Areas prone to severe weather, including tornadoes or hurricanes, often have full basements that can double as storm shelters or safe rooms. Choosing the best foundation design and material for your area and home building project can also enhance safety and resale value.

Other materials, such as brick, stone, or treated lumber, can be used as well. If you want to add extra space to your home’s floor plan, choosing a basement foundation might be the right fit. A finished basement adds square footage to your house and can function as an extra bedroom, game room, media room, or guest lodging. Pricing varies widely based on the materials, time required, and the foundation type.

While soil reports are typically completed before new construction occurs, they can sometimes provide a better picture of what’s causing the problem with your foundation and how to solve it. Beyond just the pilings, filler material, polyurethane foam, or waterproofing sealant that go into fixing a foundation, you also have to consider the cost of labor. You may be able to perform minor foundation crack repairs without needing permission from the city, but bigger repair jobs are usually substantial enough to require $75-$150 in permits. Many different issues can occur with foundations, some of which are more costly and difficult to repair than others.

This type of foundation can be more attractive than plain poured concrete, but these structures are prone to water and pest infestations. Additionally, the maintenance of a stone foundation can be more costly than a standard concrete foundation. Despite these drawbacks, stone foundations may increase the value of the home, depending on the condition of the foundation. Expect to see many homes with basement foundations in colder climates because the deep footing of a full basement is often required to manage frost heaves and other freezing conditions. Basements also hold back the surrounding soil and groundwater, giving homeowners a dry space to store holiday decorations, tools, and other items.

This type of foundation is the best system to use when other foundation types are incompatible with the conditions. Concrete slab foundations are suitable for warm climates because cold weather is likely to crack it. Some types of house foundations will not do very well in wet weather or cold weather hence the need to consult an engineer before deciding on which foundation is best for you. Although replacement is sometimes necessary, it’s possible to repair most types of foundation damage.

I would have never thought that a place like this existed, let alone in my backyard. I was completely miserable before coming in and had lost all trust and confidence from my family and friends. When I was 18 and 19 I had tried a lot of IOP programs and none of those worked for me, I failed out every time.

Until the widespread use of concrete, however, folks would pull field stones from the ground around their property and pile them up to form walls. Slab-on-grade foundations are affordable, but they’re more expensive and require more time than a poured slab. Also, if any of the pipes or mechanicals are under the slab, the repairer will have to break up the slab or cut the utility and reroute it. Crawlspace foundations are also known as raised foundations and are one of the best foundation types that a house can be built on. But for people who live in floodplains, a stable foundation is the top priority when building. When construction workers pour a slab on grade — aka, a monolithic slab — they complete the pour in one go.

To arrive at the average costs in this article, we surveyed five contractors and retailers, one financing resource and four local and national cost databases. A foundation inspection costs between $300 and $3,000, with typical inspections falling around the $600 mark. Replacing your foundation entirely can be a costly undertaking ranging between $20,000 to $100,000.

The only person that doesn't love a hot glazed KK doughnut hasn't had had one. Although federal regulators require corporations to declare the value annually, executives typically are required to wait a specified amount of time — often one to three years — to receive those shares or exercise the options. Stock- and stock-option awards are valued in the annual corporate proxy filings on the day they are awarded by the company. As a result, Tattersfield’s total compensation rose from $2.1 million in fiscal 2022 to $10.2 million in fiscal 2023, the company reported in a regulatory filing Wednesday. Josh Charlesworth was promoted from global president and chief operating officer to succeed Tattersfield in both roles, effective Jan. 1. When I was growing up ( 74 now ) they would announce on sign when hot donuts was available .

Those were the key factors in Tattersfield’s fiscal 2021 compensation ballooning to $23.5 million. The prevailing theory is that executives will be more inclined to be prudent with shareholder value, potentially taking less risk, if their own compensation is weighted primarily toward share-price performance. "While other brands seem to be making it harder on loyalty members, we’re making Krispy Kreme Rewards easier and even more generous," said Dave Skena, Global Chief Brand Officer for Krispy Kreme.

House Speaker: Johnson Elected Speaker of the House, Ending Weeks of Chaos The New York Times

who is speaker of house

The podcasts, spanning 69 episodes, offer an extended window into Mr. Johnson's views and politics, as he co-hosts the program with his wife, a licensed pastoral counselor. In it, the man who has just been elected speaker, an evangelical Christian, talks at length about his vehement opposition to abortion rights, calls the Democratic agenda socialist, and rails against the prosecution of Mr. Trump for his efforts to interfere in the 2020 election. Mr. McCarthy watched as the hard-right flank of that majority ran John A. Boehner of Ohio from his speakership in 2015 and blocked his own first attempt at securing the job, after 40 of its members announced that they would not support him, questioning his conservative credentials. “You have this moment in time where McCarthy wants it so badly and has just been raked over the coals for an awesome four days,” exulted Russ Vought, the president of the right-wing Center for Renewing America, as he listed the concessions the Republican leader had offered.

With Johnson, Republicans are rallying behind one of the staunchest religious conservatives in the House.

Rep. Pete Aguilar , the Democratic caucus chair, will deliver the nominating speech for Jeffries. Rep. Elise Stefanik, the chair of the House Republican conference, will deliver the speech nominating Johnson for speaker, according to a Republican aide. "House Democrats believe that when members of the body voted to reject the results of the 2020 election, they forfeited their ability to lead this chamber," Aguilar said.

House recesses ahead of vote on Israel resolution

At one point, Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Alabama, had to be restrained after stepping toward Mr. Gaetz. Additionally, since many speakers held office for multiple terms, often with non-consecutive periods, the time listed for each speaker represents the total length of their time as speaker. It is important to note that the period between the adjournment of one Congress and the convening of the next Congress is not included in the calculations. For instance, Nathaniel Macon served as speaker during both the 8th and 9th Congresses, but the eight-month gap between the two Congresses is not included in his service duration.

Members of the 117th Congress Sworn In

Mr. Johnson immediately faces a host of challenges that dogged his predecessor, Mr. McCarthy. He is confronting a mid-November deadline to pass a measure to fund the government to avert a shutdown. And he will need to lead a conference deeply divided over foreign policy as Congress considers the Biden administration’s $105 billion funding request for Israel, Ukraine and the southern border. Evoking his evangelical Christian faith, Mr. Johnson repeatedly referred to scripture in his speech from the House floor. Not every Republican involved in blocking Mr. McCarthy’s ascension was among those who voted against certifying Mr. Biden’s victory.

These homes are always imposing, sometimes multi-storied, and always asymmetrical. Since they are inspired by an archaic age where right angles were rare, geometric variety is celebrated. Roofs may incorporate concave eaves and boxed-in porches and windows, sometimes extending for multiple stories. With booming stock markets in the 1920s came a revival of this English Tudor and Medieval inspired style.

Mr. Johnson won after multiple rounds of ballots, beating out Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, a member of the Freedom Caucus. Representative Mike Johnson, a little-known social conservative from Louisiana, emerged on Tuesday night as the latest contender for the post after Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, dropped his bid only hours after securing the nomination. Mr. Emmer’s downfall followed a swift backlash from the right, including former President Donald J. Trump, that left his candidacy in shambles and the G.O.P. as divided as ever.

Access to City Hall is located off of Main St. The rotunda is located on the 3rd floor accessible by all elevators. To access the Tom Bradley Tower requires the “Express Car Only” for floors 1, 3, and 10 through 22 elevators. Finally once on the 26th floor, access to the 27th can be reached by stairs or one more elevator. Mr. Jeffries has been careful to say since then that his comment was strictly an observation, not a commitment. But that delicately worded signal is now seen as critical to bolstering Mr. Johnson in his decision to move ahead with the Ukraine funding in the face of a promised backlash. “That’s absurd,” her deputy chief of staff Nick Dyer told Politico, adding that Greene was “not going to tell the press” her plans for activating the motion to vacate she filed more than a month ago.

When the House resolves itself into a Committee of the Whole, the speaker designates a member to preside over the committee, who is addressed as "Mister Chairman" or "Madam Chairwoman". The presiding officer also rules on all points of order but such rulings may be appealed to the whole House. The speaker is responsible for maintaining decorum in the House and may order the Sergeant-at-Arms to enforce House rules. John Boehner was elected speaker when the 112th Congress convened on January 5, 2011, and was subsequently re-elected twice, at the start of the 113th and 114th Congresses. The Republicans came out of the 2000 elections with a further reduced majority but made small gains in 2002 and 2004. Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues.

Rep. Jim Jordan has lost the first ballot for speaker. Here's what's next.

Posted: Tue, 17 Oct 2023 07:00:00 GMT [source]

If Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio was the most prominent public face of the congressional effort to fight the results of the 2020 election, his mentee, the newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, was a silent but pivotal partner. “From an outside point of view these last few weeks probably look like total chaos, confusion, no end in sight," he said. "But from my perspective, this is one of the greatest experiences of the recent history of our republic." And the hard-right Republicans who voted to oust Mr. McCarthy, setting into motion the three-week stretch of chaos that left the House without a leader, said Mr. Johnson’s ascension to the top job made their decision to depose the California Republican worth it.

As the voting dragged on, it became clear that Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who has emerged as Mr. McCarthy’s chief adversary, would become the deciding vote. And when Mr. Gaetz voted “present,” depriving Mr. McCarthy of the majority support he needed, the California Republican blanched, stood up from his seat and walked across the House floor to speak to Mr. Gaetz himself. Mr. McCarthy still wins re-election in the district with two-thirds of the vote, but the passionate minority of the majority has become his Achilles’ heel, as it has been on the House floor this week. Two Republicans who were absent for personal reasons from votes earlier in the day, Ken Buck of Colorado and Wesley Hunt of Texas, were expected to be back in time for the vote.

Only hours later, Mr. Emmer told Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he was dropping his bid, according to a person familiar with his decision who divulged the private discussion on the condition of anonymity. To show support for racial equality, Mr. Johnson in the past has told audiences that he and his wife adopted a Black teenager they met through an evangelical youth group — like the movie “The Blind Side” but without the N.F.L. prospects, he has quipped. In the years before he arrived in Congress in 2017, Mr. Johnson worked as an attorney and spokesman for the anti-abortion-rights and anti-gay group Alliance Defense Fund — now called the Alliance Defending Freedom. During that time, he expressed some of his hard-line views in editorials in the local newspaper in his hometown of Shreveport, La. “Experts project that homosexual marriage is the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic,” he wrote in one such article in 2004. Mr. Johnson said Mr. Jordan called him when he was running for office, because “he knew I was a conservative,” contributed money to his campaign and invited him to Washington for a meeting with him and other Freedom Caucus members.

who is speaker of house

There are more questions about how Mr. Rosendale and Mr. Crane may behave in the next round. Mr. Rosendale has signaled there are rules changes that could win him over, although it’s not clear what’s left to give him to appease him. After Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who ending up holding the deciding vote, said “present,” most seated at the bar fell quiet. As the vote-casting began, a few people packed their bags, closed out their tabs and left. A bartender switched the channel from basketball to C-SPAN about 10 minutes before the vote was set to start, but it was only when the session was called to order that the rowdy crowd turned its attention fully to the screens, hooting and clapping.

McCarthy previously made a run for speaker in 2015 when then House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, resigned after an internal party battle with the more right-wing members of the chamber, including the Freedom Caucus. Despite being the favorite as majority leader, McCarthy was forced to drop out of the running when it became clear he did not have the backing of the Freedom Caucus. Pelosi rose through the ranks from minority whip to minority leader in 2002 before becoming the first woman speaker of the House in 2007.

Front-facing triangular gables sometimes break up the rectangular linearity of this style. In the 1940s, Frank Lloyd Wright, in particular, popularized a more accessible and site-specific style of Modern architecture, which softened some of the brutalism of earlier incarnations. Daring to use modern materials such as steel, poured concrete, and large panes of glass, modernist architecture proved both practical to build and very fashionable. Comfortable open-plan interiors were softened with designer furnishings, and these homes were often intended to be admired as works of art and showcases for design collections. Peaking in the 1920s and 1930s but still popular today, Mediterranean Revival style draws from an eclectic blend of Spanish Renaissance and Spanish Colonial, Italian Renaissance, Andalusian and Beaux-Arts influences.

A look at Mike Johnson and the troubled history of Republican speakers : NPR

who is speaker of house

The list of the 10 speakers who served in the job longest includes just one Republican (and in the ninth slot at that). That speaker was Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois, notorious as the autocratic "Czar Cannon" during three two-year tours as speaker that ended with his party's historic defeat in 1910. Ryan, then just 45, was the youngest speaker in nearly 150 years but had already been party's vice presidential nominee on the 2012 ticket. Once he had Boehner's job, however, he experienced much the same internal strife. Ryan also had a strained relationship with then-President Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out during the fall 2016 campaign. In April 2018, Ryan said he would not serve another term and left as the party was losing its majority that fall.

During the renovation, all of the remaining original structures from the Hearst days were demolished, except for a 110-foot Italian marble swimming pool and one of the guest homes, now known as the Marion Davies Guest House. Located in Highland Park northeast of Downtown LA, Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California during its first 100 years of statehood. The eight historic structures located at the museum were constructed during the Victorian Era. They were saved from demolition and rebuilt at the museum site along the Arroyo Seco. Historic residences at the museum include the Hale House, Valley Knudsen House, John Ford House, Perry Mansion and the Octagon House.

Even by the heated standards of the tensions that flared among House Republicans during their four-day push to elect a speaker, what happened on the House floor around 11 p.m. So much of what House Republicans want to do legislatively will go nowhere in the Democratic Senate, but the Republican majority will be able to conduct the investigations it has promised and McCarthy is emphasizing that point. The dissidents praised the protracted debate that spotlighted their party’s rifts, made it impossible for legislative business to be conducted and threatened the timely issuance of paychecks on Capitol Hill. “The motion to vacate is accountability,” he added, referring to the measure allowing a snap vote to remove the speaker.

Chip Roy of Texas said earlier tonight that the defectors won an assurance that McCarthy would launch a select committee investigating the “weaponization of government” that would receive “the kind of budget and the kind of staffing” that the Jan. 6 select committee received. “I think the House is in a lot better place with some of the work that’s been done to democratize power out of the speakership, and that’s our goal,” he said. “What we’re seeing is the incredibly shrinking speakership, and that’s most unfortunate for Congress,” former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, said as she entered the chamber on Friday afternoon. Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results after Jan. 6, 2021, but signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results.

In addition to being the first Black lawmaker to attain such a position, Jeffries is also the first person elected to lead House Democrats to be born after the end of World War II. Now that a House speaker has been selected following a days-long stalemate and members have finally been sworn in, the chamber can look toward picking back up business and organizing GOP-led committees. A firm supporter of President Joe Biden’s agenda, Clark is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. She is an advocate of gun reform, Medicare for All and raising the federal minimum wage.

The practice of earmarking — where a single lawmaker can use a sliver of the sprawling government budget to send money to a specific project in his or her state — has been both embraced and reviled over the years. Congress banned the practice more than a decade ago, after a series of scandals tied to earmarks and anti-spending fervor swept through the institution with the rise of the Tea Party, but it has since reintroduced it with more guardrails. The two clerks, Tylease Alli and Susan Cole, have been an integral part of what is now the fifth longest speaker election, and television viewers have noticed. They are the last remaining six Republican holdouts who in the last round voted against Mr. McCarthy. The House is back to the floor for its 14th vote for speaker, and the one that Representative Kevin McCarthy is saying will finally clinch the deal for him. Even before the votes had been secured, many at the bar seemed convinced that electing a speaker was inevitable as the vote drew closer to a close.

who is speaker of house

This article incorporates public domain material from websites or documents of the Federal government of the United States. The durations mentioned below are calculated based on date differences; if one were to count by the number of calendar days, all the values would be one day longer. Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, was initially included, but dropped out before voting began. Johnson won 128 votes, and Donalds received 29 votes, and there was a vote of "present." McCarthy, who was not a nominee, received 43 votes. Although Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was not in the running, he received more votes than Donalds in the final round.

Members of the House had to limit the number of their requests, letters were required documenting the need for the proposed project, and the amount of federal funds that could be directed toward earmarks overall was capped. “I think it’s great that Matt Gaetz has a group up there that’s bringing attention to what’s wrong,” said William Paulovitz, 78, referring to the firebrand Florida Republican who has been one of the far-right rebels blocking Mr. McCarthy’s bid for speaker. Mr. Paulovitz, a retired businessman, dismissed his representative’s run for speaker in a place that representative knows all too well — outside Luigi’s, a popular lunch eatery that has long been a piece of Mr. McCarthy’s self-spun Bakersfield lore. She told The Hill shortly after starting the job that she had taken diction classes to prepare and had done a three-minute audition that involved reading out a resolution, amendment, handwritten amendment, presidential message and bill. Ms. Cole previously served as a clerk on the House Financial Services Committee and was appointed as the House reading clerk in 2007 by John Boehner, who was then the House minority leader, according to Roll Call.

The year was 1923, the last time the House required multiple days and repeated votes to settle on a new speaker before this week’s continuing stalemate over the candidacy of Representative Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California. As House Republicans gathered earlier in the week to select their third nominee for speaker, Trump vowed to remain on the sidelines of the race. But hours after Emmer won the nod in a closed-door vote by the conference Tuesday morning, the former president lambasted the Minnesota Republican, writing on Truth Social that "voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake." On the floor of the House, the presiding officer is always addressed as "Mister Speaker" or "Madam Speaker", even if that person is serving as speaker pro tempore.

Adherence to strict rules and procedures is necessary to overcome the difficulty of managing a large legislative body like the House of Representatives. The president also released a statement in the early hours of Saturday after McCarthy was elected House speaker in the 15th round of voting. "I had more debate this week in Congress — more meaningful debate — more intermingling," Burchett told CNN's Jim Acosta Saturday, saying he was chatting with everyone from the prominent progressive lawmakers known as The Squad to former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Mr. Emmer’s demise was the latest evidence of the seemingly unending Republican dysfunction. He began the day with a scant victory, winning an internal party nominating contest by a vote of 117 to 97 over Mr. Johnson.

The vote put him second in line to the presidency, capping an extraordinary period of twists and turns on Capitol Hill. It marked a victory for the far right that has become a dominant force in the Republican Party, which rose up this month to effectively dictate the removal of an establishment speaker and the installation of an arch-conservative replacement. The relationship fissured after Jan. 6, 2021, when pro-Trump rioters attacked the Capitol stoked by lies of a stolen election, and Mr. McCarthy delivered a speech on the House floor condemning Mr. Trump’s role. The 118th version of the Senate did the same this week, convening for a celebratory induction of new members and the swearing in of re-elected senators on Tuesday, then quickly fleeing the capital for three weeks to allow the House to occupy the political stage alone.

But the speech infuriated Mr. Trump, and Mr. McCarthy quickly worked to get back in the former president’s good graces, traveling to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, three weeks later to meet with him. They also were unhappy that he had suggested in an interview on Fox News that the House committee investigating the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, had the political aim of damaging Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Under pressure to step aside when there appeared to be no chance that he could clinch the speaker’s gavel, he hung on anyway. “He will have to live the entirety of his speakership in a straitjacket constructed by the rules that we’re working on now,” Mr. Gaetz said.
